Do you work with your hands?
If you sit behind a computer keyboard, use a computer mouse, use hand tools, use a cash register, play guitar, have diabetes, or are just unlucky, you may be at risk for carpal tunnel syndrome. Even writing with a pen can put you at risk.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm to the palm of the hand, gets squeezed at the wrist. The pressure can make the fingers, hands, wrists, and sometimes the arms hurt, feel numb, and become weak.
There are five main symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.
These include the following:
- Numbness and tingling in your fingers - especially in your thumb, pointer finger, and middle finger.
- Pain sensations in the thumb and fingers
- Pain and tingling that spreads from the hand up to the wrist, forearm, and shoulder
- Weakness and clumsiness in the hands
- Dropping things
